Neuroplasticity

“an umbrella term referring to the brain’s ability to change, reorganize, or grow neural networks.”
“some connections are strengthened while others are eliminated. This process is known as synaptic pruning.”

HRV (Heart Rate Variability)

Heart rate variability: How it might indicate well-being

People who have a high HRV may have greater cardiovascular fitness and may be more resilient to stress. HRV may also provide personal feedback about your lifestyle and help motivate those who are considering taking steps toward a healthier life. You might see a connection to HRV changes as you incorporate more mindfulness, meditation, sleep, and especially physical activity into your life. For those who love data and numbers, this could be a way to track how your nervous system is reacting not only to the environment, but also to your emotions, thoughts, and feelings.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV)

People with high heart rate variability are usually less stressed and happier. In general, low heart rate variability is considered a sign of current or future health problems because it shows your body is less resilient and struggles to handle changing situations.

Meditations - Marcus Aurelius

“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own - not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine. And so none of them can hurt me. No one can implicate me in ugliness. Nor can I feel angry at my relative, or hate him. We were born to work together like feet, hands and eyes, like the two rows of teeth, upper and lower. To obstruct each other is unnatural. To feel anger at someone, to turn your back on him: these are unnatural.”

Benefits of Taking Cold Shower

Cold Shower Benefits for Your Health

  1. Our body has a tendency to adapt to harsher conditions. As a result, our bodies become more resistant to stress after regular exposure to cold water.

  2. Endorphin: The cold water sends many electrical impulses to your brain. They jolt your system to increase alertness, clarity, and energy levels.

    • Endorphins, which are sometimes called happiness hormones, are also released. This effect leads to feelings of well-being and optimism.
  3. Circulation: Water that’s colder than our natural body temperature causes the body to work slightly harder to maintain its core temperature. When taken regularly, cold showers can make our circulatory system more efficient. By bringing the temperature of an area of the body down, we speed up the delivery of warmer, freshly oxygenated blood to that area.

  • Rebound Vasodilation: Once the cold is removed, the body’s natural response is to rewarm the area, which leads to a rebound vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels). This brings in a fresh supply of warm, oxygen-rich blood, helping to flush out waste products and speed up the repair of tissues.
  1. Fight off common illnesses: Our bodies are designed to become resistant to the elements we are exposed to. For example, leukocytes help fight infection in the body. The shock of cold water in the bloodstream stimulates leukocytes. This means that taking cold showers can help your resistance to common illnesses, like colds and the flu.

Wherever they might be they always remember that the past was a lie, that memory has no return, that every spring gone by could never be recovered, and that the wildest and most tenacious love was an ephemeral truth in the end.

Why wearing the hood of a hoodie stops the wind?

It’s a windy day, as I’m walking on campus, I hear the wind is blowing into my face. Then I put on the hood, the wind stops. Why is the wind not going into the hood?

  1. The hood traps a layer of still air within it, which acts as insolution.
  2. When the wind hits the hood, it creates a boundary layer of air that moves with the hood.
  3. As wind moves over the surface of the hood, it creates a low-pressure area on the front of the hood.
  4. While the higher pressure of the still air inside the hood discourages external air from entering the hood.
  5. Effectively, the hood redirects the airflow around the head, i.e. stops the wind from blowing into the face.

Why barefoot shoes?

People often forget that feet are incredibly complex structures, highly evolved for mobility and stability. However, years of wearing restrictive footwear limits your feet. Padding weakens your muscles and reduces flexibility, and narrow toe boxes squish your feet.

Barefoot shoes prioritize maximum ground feel, encouraging natural foot mechanics like toe spreading and barefoot-style walking.

Benefits:

  1. Stronger feet: barefoot shoes activate more muscles in your feet and ankles. This strengthens your muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
  1. Enhances balance & more skilful movement. Increased sensory feedback can help improve your proprioception, or spatial awareness. This lets you move more skilfully while exercising, adventuring, or living day to day.

  2. A bit of debate on this topic.

Quantum Physics

  • Schrödinger’s cat

Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger, one of the founders of quantum mechanics, posed this famous question: If you put a cat in a sealed box with a device that has a 50% chance of killing the cat in the next hour, what will be the state of the cat when that time is up? Chad Orzel investigates this thought experiment.

  • The Original Double Slit Experiment

Light is so common that we rarely think about what it really is. But just over two hundred years ago, a groundbreaking experiment answered the question that had occupied physicists for centuries. Is light made up of waves or particles?
The experiment was conducted by Thomas Young and is known as Young’s Double Slit Experiment. This famous experiment is actually a simplification of a series of experiments on light conducted by Young. In a completely darkened room, Young allowed a thin beam of sunlight to pass through an aperture on his window and onto two narrow, closely spaced openings (the double slit). This sunlight then cast a shadow onto the wall behind the apparatus. Young found that the light diffracted as it passed through the slits, and then interfered with itself, created a series of light and dark spots. Since the sunlight consists of all colours of the rainbow, these colours were also visible in the projected spots. Young concluded that light consist of waves and not particles since only waves were known to diffract and interfere in exactly the manner that light did in his experiment.

  • Double Slit Experiment explained! by Jim Al-Khalili

Sometimes called the “two-slit” or “Young’s” experiment, it demonstrates that matter and energy can display the characteristics of both waves and particles, establishing the principle known as wave-particle duality. Furthermore, it questions the role of the observer in the outcome of events and demonstrates the fundamental limitation of an observer to predict experimental results.
For this reason, Richard Feynman called it “a phenomenon which is impossible … to explain in any classical way, and which has in it the heart of quantum mechanics. In reality, it contains the only mystery [of quantum mechanics],”

The Halo Effect

The halo effect is a cognitive bias where our overall impression of a person/somthing influences our judgments about their specific traits or characteristics. Initial positive or negative feelings shape our subsequent evaluations in an often irrational manner.

For instance, if you finds someone attractive, you might also assume they are intelligent, successful, and kind, even though you have no evidence of these traits.

The initial impression of one characteristic creates a “halo” that affects your judgment of their other characteristics.

2 Types of Empathy

Affective empathy and cognitive empathy are the two main types of empathy.
Affective Empathy: The ability to respond with an appropriate emotion to another’s mental states.
Example: Feeling sad when you see someone else crying.
Purpose: Helps in connecting with others on an emotional level.
Cognitive Empathy: The ability to understand another person’s perspective or mental state.
Example: Recognizing and understanding why someone is upset, even if you don’t feel the same emotion.
Purpose: Aids in effective communication and problem-solving by understanding others’ viewpoints.
